Preparing for IELTS

IELTS is an easy exam, but like every other exam you need to have certain tips and tricks in your mind.

Start off by going through the book which is couriered to you by the British Council when you book your exam and solve all questions.(timed)

Once you have solved, you will get an idea of your strengths and weaknesses. Now you need to work on them.

Cambridge IELTS books are the gold standard for this exam. However, you can very well pass the exam without using these books

Reading: Time is the key here. If you are a slow reader, start practising by reading novels and newspapers in a timed mode for a couple of weeks and you are good to go.

Listening: People generally score high in this section. Some might have difficulty understanding few accents. I suggest you start off by watching a few English movies with subtitles.

Speaking:
  • This section can be difficult for people who are introvert and talk less. You need to elaborate on each and every answer.
  • Get a study partner or ask your parents/ siblings to be the examiner while practising.
  • Be natural and think that you are having a chat with your seniors in college.
  • Smile and be polite.
Writing
  • This is where most of the people are stuck.
  • The marking scheme is really subjective and really cant do anything about it.
  • Divide the time between the 2 tasks:20 minutes for task 1 and 40 minutes for task 2.
  • Always count the total number of words in the end and make sure that it exceeds the word limit. This is really crucial as you tend to lose marks if the word count is less.
  • Use complex sentences instead of simple or compound. Use connectors to make such sentences.(Google for connectors and pick up the ones which suit your writing style)
  • Prefer using a pencil over a pen as you can easily make changes in the end if you have time.
Good luck!
